Experiment # 4 – Growing our garden thus far (photo heavy)

Participants: Matt and Melissa (and some Heidi in-between!)

Meet our garden. This garden wasn’t just one experiment, but hundreds of experiments. Learning about soil, different plants (then about different varieties of that plant), as well as all their needs is an endless task. There is a lot of trial and error involved…but also a lot of success! Here are some photos of the latter:

Amaranth

Basil

Borage

Chamomile

Cucumbers

Dill

Kohlrabi

(Our neighbor's) morning glories wanted to join the gang

Also our neighbor's plant that grew over the fence...still unsure of what it is

Rosemary

Sage

Spearmint

Swiss Chard

Tomatoes

Watermelon (a pleasant surprise after losing all of our baby watermelons to the squirrels)

We wanted strong seed starts for our first year of gardening, and invested into a grow light set-up.

Chopping up a vegetable you mended from seed to harvest is an amazing, gratifying feeling.

I am wrapping up my college essay comic, "Working Hands, Working Minds" (titled after the school’s), which will go more into our journey into gardening. In the meantime, here’s the cover:

If you ever dreamed of having a garden, but haven't really dived in, I highly encourage you do so! Gardening has changed my life and the way that I look at food.

Until next time!
