We did it! We raised the necessary funds to run Jamaica's first Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World)! We haven't seen the list yet of who donated to our camp--but I am just going to say a huge THANK YOU ahead of time. I never planned a summer camp before---and golly, it is a lot of moving parts---from finding a venue, to figuring out how to feed everybody, scheduling speakers to come, designing T-shirts---phew! "Nuff" work went into putting this camp together and we had a truly great team in order to get the job done.
In over 60 countries, Camp GLOW has been an effective strategy to empower adolescent girls by increasing their skills in leadership and opportunity, as well as encouraging community engagement. Peace Corps Volunteers and their teacher counterparts formed the first Camp GLOW in Romania in 1995 as a platform to address the challenges of local young women. Today, the camp has been replicated all over the world, with tailored programming to fit the needs of the young women in their individual communities.
During a 4-day, 3-night camp, Camp GLOW Jamaica aims to lead campers in activities centered on developing leadership skills, self-development, and increasing knowledge of respecting and caring for the environment. We wish to promote the belief that every camper has the ability to make a difference in her community. The above objectives of Camp GLOW will be met through art, music, interaction with nature, and reflective writing.
Though this project was my very first completed grant, it would not have been successful without the framework that Erin Dickman, a previous Peace Corps Volunteer, laid out...as well as the hard work of about 10 (currently serving) amazing women in my Peace Corps group. Big up yuhselves!
So now, thanks to the support of local communities in Jamaica, Michelle Obama's Let Girls Learn Initiative and kind donors (can't wait to find out who you are!), we can pounce into action! I will be sure to update everyone on how the camp goes!
